Sturgeon
Year-Round (Catch & Release)
Sturgeon are one of the oldest species of fish on Earth, and the Columbia River is home to some of the largest white sturgeon in the world. These prehistoric giants can exceed 10 feet in length and weigh several hundred pounds. Fishing for sturgeon on the Columbia is primarily catch-and-release, with occasional retention seasons that are quota-based and closely regulated. The fight of a large sturgeon is unlike anything else in freshwater — raw power, deep runs, and head shakes that will test your gear and your endurance. Whether you hook into a 4-footer or a true monster, sturgeon fishing on the Columbia is an experience you won't forget.
Book This Trip →Best Seasons to Fish Sturgeon
Timing is everything. Here's when to target Sturgeon on the Columbia and Snake Rivers.
Spring
March - May
Spring is one of the best times to target sturgeon as they become more active with rising water temperatures. Fish move into shallower feeding areas and are more aggressive. The Hanford Reach and areas below the dams are top producers during this period.
- ▸Hanford Reach
- ▸McNary Dam
Summer
June - September
Summer sturgeon fishing remains productive, with fish holding in deeper pools and current seams. Early morning and evening bites tend to be strongest. Water levels and temperatures play a big role in fish positioning during the warmer months.
- ▸Hanford Reach
- ▸Columbia River Mainstem
Fall & Winter
October - February
Sturgeon fishing slows down as water temperatures drop, but dedicated anglers still find success targeting fish in known wintering holes. Patience is key during the colder months, but the reward can be a trophy-class fish with less pressure on the water.
- ▸Hanford Reach
- ▸McNary Dam
Where We Fish for Sturgeon
We guide Sturgeon trips across multiple stretches of the Columbia and Snake River systems.
- ▸
Hanford Reach
The primary sturgeon fishery on the Columbia. The natural free-flowing riverbed provides ideal habitat for oversized white sturgeon year-round.
- ▸
McNary Dam
Most retention seasons start at McNary Dam. The tailrace area concentrates baitfish and sturgeon alike, making it a top spot for both numbers and size.
